Why a HART Hub?

Substance use health is community health.

Many people use substances. This is already part of our community.

Substance use health is part of the human experience. It always has been. People use substances for many reasons: to manage pain, to cope with stress, to connect socially, or simply out of curiosity. Most people who use substances do not have a substance use disorder. But, for some, the relationship with substances becomes more complicated. When that happens, it is a health matter, not a character flaw.

The people in our community who use substances are not strangers. They are our neighbours, coworkers, family members, and friends. When substance use health improves, the whole community benefits. When stigma gets in the way, everyone pays the price.

Stigma affects a community’s health

Stigma is the number one reason people do not seek support. Silence does not protect our community. It harms it. And most of the time, we do not realize we are judging others.

Consider the assumptions we make. Believing someone “chose this” or “just needs to stop” ignores the complexity of substance use disorders and the many paths that lead people there.

When we do not talk openly about substance use health, people who need support learn to hide. Shame grows in the absence of honest conversation, and shame keeps people from reaching out.

Compassion becomes easier when we recognize our shared health, our shared community, and our shared humanity.

Across Ontario, the need for health-based, compassion-driven supports is growing. Every community deserves access to care that responds to people’s needs, not to assumptions about what brought them to need care.
